What happened is that a bunch of naked apes were turned loose by The Enlightenment, and the rationalism that led to it; soothed by the idea that life could be made perfect without morality, restraint and pain; they also quickly learned that metaphorical and actual wanking could fill the idle hours between abusing the weak and creating systems to steal from their betters. It led to the Democratic Party.
