Medical backlash over health foods
Just when you thought it was safe to near the fridge!
Use trans-fats for cooking, do not use cottonseed, palm, or lard for frying. Eat a low fat diet for your health; avoid fatty diets for longevity. Eggs are bad, coffee is harmful, red meat is lethal, eat a lot of fish and salt is bad for you. Take multivitamins for your fast-paced lifestyle.
In nutrition, a plausible idea and a little bit of evidence are all that is needed to create a market. And such is the megaphone of marketing and the influence of countless “healthy eating” articles that these ideas, even the half-baked ones, can lodge very firmly in the national psyche. [snip]
For those of you who damn near turned orange from taking beta-carotene, here’s another dose of ohmigod I shouldn’t have listened. Are the anti-oxidants now rusting your corpus? How about your vitamins giving you heart disease?

Research published today suggests that regular consumption of a wide range of vitamin pills, taken by more than ten million people in the UK, may actually increase the risk of dying, while eating low-fat dairy products could make it harder for some women to conceive.
The vitamin study, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, overturns earlier research suggesting that vitamins A, E and beta carotene could protect against heart disease and cancer. [snip]
You should have listened to your mother when she said, “Eat sensibly and TAKE small bites.”
Next they’ll be telling you global warming is true.
